Aruba is located off the Paraguaná Peninsula of Venezuela. The climate is tropical but not too extreme, with a fairly constant temperature of 82 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius) throughout the year. The Dutch took over Aruba in 1642 and although there was a short period between 1805 and 1816 when the British assumed control the Dutch returned in 1816. In 1824 gold was discovered in Aruba and was mined extensively, becoming a major export for the counrty. In fact things have changed considerably over the last three decades. Aruba has now become an island with probably the highest standard of living in the West Indies from its oil reserves and now tourism. The illiteracy rate is exceptionally low and in just a few years, Aruba has become one of the most popular vacation spots in the Caribbean, with visitor figures approaching a million annually.
