Sydney City

The first humans arrived in Australia approximately 70,000 years ago from south east Asia. They developed a sophisticated culture that integrates religion, history, law, art and codes of behaviour into complex ceremonies. Their lifestyle remained essentially unchanged until the arrival of the British into Botany Bay in the 1770's.

From these ancient beginnings as the oldest settlement in the country, Sydney has become the economic centre of the nation and Australia's premier city. The success of the 2000 Olympics established Sydney as one of the world's great cities. The State capital of New South Wales, Sydney is a thriving centre for both business and the arts. The city has all the cosmopolitan amenities top shopping, excellent restaurants and buzzing nightlife. Carved between the mountains and the sea, it also offers the ultimate in the great outdoors. The Pacific Ocean swells onto golden beaches, while further inland there are beautiful national parks.

Must See in Sydney

No visit to Sydney would be complete without a trip around Circular Quay. It is built around Sydney Cove and is considered by many to be the focal point of the city. For many years this was the shipping centre of Sydney, but it's now a recreational space, with harbour walkways, restaurants, buskers, parks, the Museum of Contemporary Art and, of course, the Sydney Opera House.

Darling Harbour is a harbourside leisure park. Its various venues include Sydney Aquarium and Powerhouse Museum, the Australian National Maritime Museum and plenty of shopping opportunities.

To get an impression of the original Sydney then Macquarie St has Sydney's greatest concentration of early public buildings. Most of these are open to the public.

For those who like the out door life then a visit to Bondi Beach is a must or maybe a trip to Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park which has over 100km (62mi) of shoreline, plenty of forest and wildlife and some magnificent Aboriginal rock art.
