Bahrain consists of a group of 33 islands, with an area of 707 square kilometres. It is situated in the Arabian Gulf, off the east coast of Saudi Arabia. The state takes its name from the largest island Bahrain, the climate is hot in summer and mild in winter. As well as those carefree days spent on the beach there are the Souks and fascinating Mosques to visit and of course you must buy some of their 21 carat gold "as a souvenir" of course.

Driving in Bahrain

Driving in Bahrain is on the right. Mobiles are not allowed unless through a hands-free attachment. Road signs are in English and Arabic. The speed limit on inner city roads varies between 50 and 80 kph and the maximum on highways is 100 kph.

Must see
  • The Souk - No Visit to Bahrain would be completed without a trip to the soukh , with its profusion of colors, sounds, and aromas. All kinds of wares are sold, from colourful textiles to gold and jewelery as well as the traditional array of herbs and spices and local farmers produce. Bartering is still expected, and indeed turns the whole experience of shopping into a challenge to see who can obtain the best price. The central market was completed in 1978 and provides modern facilities for all of the different trades.
  • Sayadi House - This is one of the most impressive examples of a 19th century built by the pearl-merchant Ahmed Bin Qassem Siyadi and has many fine features to look out for, including ornate ceilings, stained-glass windows, carved screens and a large safe set into the wall of a small, upper reception room.
  • Al-Khamis Mosque - This Mosque is considered to be one of the oldest relics of Islam in the region, and the foundations are believed to have been laid as early as 692AD. The twin minarets of this ancient mosque are easily identifiable as you drive along the Sh. Salman Road. It has since been rebuilt twice in both 14th & 15th centuries, when the minarets were constructed and the mosque has been partially restored recently.
