Tenerife has two airports:- Tenerife Norte, which is the smaller situated to the north of the island that handles mainly commercial freight; and secondly the main international tourist airport of Tenerife Sur, correctly known as Sofia Riena.
As a tourist or business traveller, you will arrive at the latter. This is a busy, efficient terminal, handling upwards of 9 million passengers each year. Its busiest time is in fact in the winter months, when Tenerife reaches its height of popularity with travellers from all over Europe arriving to take advantage of the warm winter climate of the island. As on would expect in a thriving tourist resort, Tenerife has many, many hotels of every grade of luxury from the 5 star Julio Caesar and Cleopatra's Palace to smaller unclassified establishments. You may also like to rent a villa or an apartment. The choice is endless, but the resorts do get busy – particularly in the winter months, so you will be well advised to check availability and book prior to travelling.

Facilities at Tenerife Airport

The airport facilities are first class with facilities that include comfortable lounges,a pharmacy, a bank, bureaux de change, cafes, restaurants, bars and a friendly helpdesk staffed by English speakers. There are plenty of shops in the terminal building offering a variety of goods from clothing to leather goods and jewellery. Tobacco and duty free drinks are also available at relatively inexpensive prices due to the tax free status of the island. Disability access is excellent throughout the terminal which is equipped with special ‘help' phones for the mobility impaired. Parking is however somewhat limited although there are plenty of disabled spaces close to the terminal building.

Visiting Tenerife

Tenerife is a wonderful holiday destination. It is the largest of the Canary Islands. The landscape changes dramatically from huge areas that have been blasted and twisted into weird geological formations to lush green, fertile valleys in which tropical fruits such as bananas and unusual citrus grow alongside vines and tomatoes. Then before you know it, you are at the coast that itself varies from steep rocky promontories to smooth sandy beaches, lapped by the waves of the Atlantic. There is a lot on offer to the tourist, good hotels, friendly people, delicious food and wine, long clean beaches and interesting towns and scenery. Shopping is cheap with the island being a partly tax free area. There are bargains to be had for the careful shopper.
