Corsica is one of the 26 regions of France and is the fourth largest island in the Meditteranean. Corsica is situated in the heart of the Mediterranean a distance of just 80km from Italy and 170km from the French coast. Because it is nearer to Italy it many more Italian influences but politically it is governed by France. Corsica has over 200 beaches totalling over 1,000 km of coastline. Inland Corsica is fairly mountainous with 21 peaks of over 2,000 m. Corsica is therefore popular with both French and other European tourists due to its stunning scenery and beautiful coastlines.

 

Must see in Corsica
  • Parc Naturel Régional de Corse - Opened as a Natural Park in 1972, it contains some of the highest peaks in Corsica and with it mass of parkland is home to thousands of protected plants and wildlife species.
  • Bonifacio Citadelle- The citadel of Bonifacio sits above the Mediterranean on a rock promontory sometimes called 'Corsica's Gibraltar'. On all sides of the Citadelle, white limestone cliffs drop vertically and dramatically into the sea.
  • Place St-Nicolas - This is a 19th-century square which is libned with cafes and a lively flea market on Sunday mornings. During the summer live concerts give even more atmosphere to the square whaich is always under the watchful eye of the statue of Napoleon.

  • Journées Médiévales (Bonifacio) - June - Throughout the month of June there is a variety of medieval entertainments and exhibitions.
  • Renno's A Tumbera: Foire du Porc Coureur - This is a festival held in February each year which celebrates a Corsican variety of mountain pig.
  • Nuits de la Guitare à Patrimonio - Held in July this is one of Europes largest Guitar festivals held in a small viallge called Patrimonio.
