Santo Domingo is the capital of the Dominican Republic it’s the largest city in the Caribbean and was founded in 1496. Within the UNESCO listed Colonial Zone is the Cathedral of Santa María la Menor , it is dedicated to St. Mary of the Incarnation and is the oldest cathedral in the Americas, begun in 1512 and completed in 1540. It is the Cathedral of the Archbishop of Santo Domingo who has the honorary title of Primate of the Americas because Santo Domingo was the first Catholic diocese established in the New World. Within the cathedral is a wealth of wonderful artifacts including paintings, furniture, sculptures and tombstones.

The open air cave of limestone and a trio of lakes make up the Los Tres Ojos, known in English asThe Three Eyes, located in the Mirador del Este park is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Dominican Republic. The caves and are illuminated at night with beautiful coloured lights. Visitors have the opportunity to explore them via a staircase cut into the rocks.

February 27th is the date for the Independence Day celebration. On the last day of the Carnival there is a re-enactment of the Trinitarians’ 1844 torch-lit march to El Conde. This is accompanied by the tune of the 1812 Overture along with live cannon fire. After this, make your way to Puerta San Diego which is the location for some big-name merengue acts.

Late July is the time when locals hold the Merengue Festival. With outdoor concerts on the Malecón along with the more traditional accordion merengue groups and merengue-based “folklore” shows at the National Theatre.
