Bordeaux is in the south west of France in the Aquitaine region near the Atlantic Coast. Built on the River Garonne and divided in two, to the east on the right bank and to the west on the left bank. Paris is connected to Bordeaux by the A10 motorway, and there are motorways to Lyon and Toulouse and to Spain on the A63.

Founded about 300 BC by a tribe of Celts and around 60 BC was under the rule of the Romans. Bordeaux was under the realm of England from the 12th to 15th century following the marriage of Henry II to Eleanor of Aquitaine. The golden age was the 18th century with trading wine to Germany and the UK. Many of the buildings are from this era and were declared by Victor Hugo to be more beautiful than Versailles. With beaches, good museums and a thriving nightlife all within the splendour of grand historical buildings with wide avenues and landscaped parks Bordeaux is a very attractive city.

It is the capital city of Aquitaine and the world famous wine and French cuisine is the attraction for tourists from across the globe. In the Bourse Square on the riverfront is the unusual Museum of Customs & Excise with curios all associated with this role. There is a maze of cobbled streets and alleys and medieval gateways and in the Grand Theatre which is built on a site which was a Roman temple dancing and opera provide a cultural experience. The Gothic Cathedral is near the shopping quarter and the belfry provides a panoramic view of the City.

Bordeaux is the base of the French Ministry of Defense for a project involving laser and optical technology. The city is a centre for the building of aircraft ranging from military planes to private jets. This industry involves over 20,000 people working on the construction and design.

Bordeaux has 9,000 chateaux producing wine from 11,7000 hectars of vineyards under the watchful eye of 13,00 growers and 400 traders. Annual production is over 700 million bottles of wine which makes Bordeaux the largest wine producer in the world. As well as the much sought after labels quantities of table wine are also very popular both white and red. In the UK claret is the label given to red Bordeaux. One of the renowned and most expensive wine is Chateau Lafite-Rothschild

Bordeaux Airport

Bordeaux Merignac Airport is located about 7.5 miles from the City of Bordeaux and is accessed from junctions 11 a or b from the ring road. There are 2 terminals and there is a covered walkway to each. The information desk for both is in the arrivals area. The bureau de change is found in A terminal and the cash machines are in B terminal. both terminals have plenty of places to eat and drink and each has a first aid post and facilities for those with children.

The shops, duty free, newsagent and gift are located in A terminal and in the departure area computer access is available in the business centre. A VIP lounge is available in the airport. Both terminals have access for those with special needs and also identified parking and toilets. There are 4 car parks, one long stay, one short stay and two are public. Parking is free for 30 minutes
