On an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean in north west France is the commercial city and port of Brest. In medieval times Brest was a fortress town and in 1596 was where the council who established the United Catholic Church had their meeting place. Situated at the junction of Mukhavets and Western Bug rivers it is close to the Polish border, and until 1795 was regarded as being Polish. As a port it is important as a commercial base and also a naval base. The French Naval Academy is here and the French Engineering College.

Textiles, metals, paper and electronic equipment are all manufactured in this industrial city. The landlocked harbour was commissioned by Cardinal Richelieu in 1631 as an arsenal and military base. During the reign of Louis X1V the castle and ramparts were built and provide a great view of the city, and 3 of the towers are home to the National Marine Museum.

Brest is a modern thriving city which has retained the authentic atmosphere of Brittany and over the years has been the venue for many exciting events. In 1999 over a million people celebrated the French victory of winning the World Cup. Joan Baez has been in concert here and dancing and music in the tradition of the Bretons is a regular event.

Unfortunately Brest was quite heavily bombed during the war and there are few historical sites to visit but having been rebuilt there is a modern day image with remnants of the city as it was which add a little mystery. The biggest attraction is Oceanopolis just east of the city centre, a futuristic development with 3 aquariums and 3 D cinemas. There are plenty of bars and bistros, and restaurants to suit every pocket. Good French cuisine and wine sit side by side with a cosmopolitan variety of places to sample food from far and wide.

Brest Airport

Located in the north west of Brittany Brest Airport is a rapidly expanding area with a new terminal and additional facilities for travellers. It is expected to have over a million and a half passengers a year. A bus service operates between the Airport and surrounding area and the journey from the airport to the centre of Brest takes just over 15 minutes by bus and fares are cheap.

Taxis are always available and are on the rank outside the terminal building. Brest airport is along the E50 motorway heading to Morlaix and is well marked and easy to follow. There is plenty of parking both long and short term and for those staying for less than an hour it is free. The car parks are a short distance from the main terminal building. In the terminal there are plenty of shops, a boutique, newsagent and duty free.

To refresh travellers there are restaurants and coffee shops and nearby is the Bureau de Change, conference centre, internet access, first aid post and baby changing area. All arrangements can be made for those with special needs.
