Courchevel

Widely regarded as one of the best ski resorts in the world, Courchevel combines a traditional village atmosphere with an exclusive alpine playground. It's massive ski area, first class lift connections to the other 3 valleys resorts and immaculately groomed pistes contribute to some of the best skiing in France. It is a favourite hang-out of the Paris jet set, but as you move further down the slopes, life becomes more affordable.

During the winter sports season the snow is superb and can last well into April. As testament to the quality of snow and facilities, Courchevel hosted the 1992 Winter Olympic Games. It also has played host to a stage of the Tour de France on several occasions.

There are a large number of other non-skiing activities to do in summer which would make a visit memorable. You can choose from energetic activities such as mountain biking, rock and mountain climbing, backpacking, hiking, fishing, canoeing and kayaking. Or enjoy something more restful like enrolling in the cookery school or taking language lessons. For the adventurous, then there are helicopter flights, flying lessons, paragliding or hot air ballooning. Children as also well catered for in all age groups. Actives include pony riding, bouncy castles, nature trails or climbing lessons. All this plus an excellent night life all year round makes Courchevel well worth a visit!

Must See in Courchevel

  • It is possible to limit your visits during the winter to slopes around Courchevel or to other ski resorts nearby such as like Val d'Isère or Chamonix. However, Courchevel is not just worth visiting in the winter and if you wish to travel further then there are plenty of places to visit.
  • A gondola ride over the hill is Brides-les-Bains, which offers a nice small casino, an old church, a sprinkle of spas, and some lovely old buildings.
  • A drive away, is Lyon, with its Roman theatres, wildly mock-Byzantine Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourviere, wonderful Renaissance mansions and the second largest French Art Museum.
  • Aix-les-Bains with the wonderful Roman baths and Temple of Diana deserve a stop or a day trip, as does Annecy, which is also sized nicely for day trips, and boasts a lovely chateau. All of these excursions are best done in summer, in winter before the snow builds, or towards the end of the season when the weather's reliable and the roads are dry.
