Car Hire Nice :: Nice City Guide

Nice is situated on the Mediterranean coast on the French Riviera in the far south of France in the Cote d'Azur. This beautiful city has been a favourite with tourists from all over the world for centuries.

The remains of Roman architecture including a significant amphitheatre, bears witness to the occupation of the city and the surrounding region by the men and women of the mighty Roman Empire. Much further back, archaeological finds show that the city has been home to man since prehistoric and Neanderthal times. Today it is a delight for those interested in mediaeval architecture, retaining as it does the charming Old Town area with its twisting roads and alleys and its houses with their characteristic red clay pan tiled roofs forming terraces that now hold a wealth of interesting cafes and elegant boutiques and craft shops.

Nice is simply a dream of a place to visit. Its idyllic setting on the azure shores of the Mediterranean, the beaches, the many parks, the stylish promenades lined with exotic palm trees all serve to make the city a very special and beautiful destination. The weather is equally kind. Nice enjoys unusually long hot summers and mild winters. Even in the depths of winter, temperatures seldom fall below 45 degrees, and in high summer 81 degrees is about average with cooling winds from the sea keeping things refreshed. Year upon year, it is voted by the French as the place in which most would like to live and I for one can understand why.

The city has a strong reputation for gastronomy. Restaurants abound serving very special food and wine. Niçois cooking is well-respected and considered unique. The specialities of the region include, Ratatouille Niçoise, Sardines Farcies à la Niçoise and of course Salade Niçoise.
The area around the city is equally beautiful. Drive out to discover wonderful hilltop villages, fields of lavender, sunflowers and of course vines. Don't forget that Nice is close to the border with Italy and Monaco and day trips are easy to achieve. Close by is the famous Monte Carlo and its casinos, so if you fancy a flutter -!
