Car Hire Val d'Isere :: Val d'Isere City Guide

Val d'Isère is renowned as a winter resort and the ski season runs from mid-December to late April, although it is open year-round. It was first discovered by winter sports enthusiasts 80 years ago and the fortunes of the village changed forever. Its impossible to get bored in Val d'Isere, it is renowned for its lively apres ski scene and with around twenty different bars, there's bound to be something to suit all tastes. There are over 60 restaurants where dishes range from the usual savoyard specialities to fine haute cuisine. For the shopaholic, Val d'Isère has everything from tacky souvenir shops to art galleries, haute couture and technical clothing. Almost all the shops in Val d'Isere are open seven days per week. Val d'Isere is proud that is has reduced the volume of car traffic in resort and the bus service is free of charge. There are buses linking the different areas of the resort everyday of the winter season.

This depends on personal preference and what activities you want to do. Val d'Isere's record of snowfall is without exception absolutely superb. Whilst benefiting from the same Atlantic depressions as other French resorts, due to its location, it often benefits from the Mediterranean low pressures which dump their snow on the Italian Alps. The snow coverage tends to be one of the best in Europe, and conditions normally facilitate good skiing right to the end of the season (April/ May). During the winter sports season the amount of snow, conditions and number of visitors vary tremendously depending on each month so it's a good idea to check forecasts before you book.

The busiest summer months are June, July and August and there are loads of activities for all the family. The weather during the daytime will be much as for the rest of France but the evenings have the advantage of being cooler - so you can sleep well.
