Corfu International Airport

Technically known as the Ioannis Kapodistrias (or Capodistrias) International Airport, Corfu International airport is situated near the bay of Pontikonissi, some 3 kilometers from the island capital, Corfu Town (or Kerkyra). The Ionian island of Corfu is especially popular with British tourists, and many British air companies provide direct flights to the airport.

The airport offers the usual, comprehensive range of amenities and services to
travellers, including gift shops, tax-free shopping areas, restaurants, snack bars and
currency services. Although car parking is somewhat limited, one can access all parts of the island from the airport by local bus, taxis or concessionary coaches provided by many of the hotels. Alternatively, take advantage of the car hire opportunities.

Island of Corfu

Corfu is one of the Ionian Islands to the west of the Greek mainland. It is 36 miles long and 15 miles wide at the north. Liberally covered with olive trees, Corfu is one of the greenest of the Mediterranean islands. Its natural geography is very varied. At a little short of a thousand meters high, Mount Pantocrator forms the centre of the island. The north east coast offers sheltered rocky coves and traditional fishing communities.

The west coast is made up of high rocky cliffs and sandy beaches, with the north and south providing the more commercial face of Corfu with its lively night life of bars and clubs. The island even boasts its own (very tricky) golf course at Ermones to the west.

Places to visit on Corfu

  • Corfu Town (Kerkyra) is the island capital. It is very Colonial British – it even has its own cricket pitch – and is a beautiful small town. It is a maze of old narrow streets dominated by the 16th century fortress. It is a treasure trove of picturesque buildings with many beautiful chapels, splendid mansions in the Greek formal style and lush parks and gardens. Small shops selling virtually everything imaginable can be found in the alleys around the centre of the town.
  • Local goldsmiths are masters of jewellery design and prices are very competitive. Wild honey, lace and delicious fig ‘cakes' are also locally produced and are well worth the relatively small purchase price.
  • Facing the Liston Esplanade is the Old Fort with a history stretching from the 6th to the 19th century.
  • St. Spiridon's Church, housing the island's patron 'mummified' saint, is impressive. Easter is very special in Corfu with many religious and spectacular parades and celebrations.

Dates for your Diary

  • July and August are the festival months in Corfu, although there are some in June and September.
  • 1st of September is the start of the 'Pie festival' in Loustri. The local baker and many of the local taverns donate huge pies to go with the free flowing wine and to help the public festivities along.
