The island of Crete has two international airports. The bigger and principal one is in Heraklion and the other one is at Chania. There is also a small domestic airport in Sitia. Heraklion is the main Airport and is the destination for tourist flights. There is a designated area for parking and the terminal has the usual facilities for passengers which includes, information desk, food outlets and an area for left luggage. Any specific requirements should be arranged in advance.

About Crete

Crete is the largest Greek island. It is the border between the Aegean and Libyan seas and between Europe and Africa. The climate is known to be one of the mildest and healthiest in Europe. The island of Crete is very mountainous. Gorges split the mountain ranges creating fertile valleys, There are more than 3,000 large and small caves, several of them with impressive stalactites and stalagmites. Rocky coasts, large sandy beaches and pebble shores create the coastline. The dry-stone farm buildings in the villages are found high up on plateaux. Monasteries and isolated castles and chapels are to be found throughout the countryside. Villages are dominated by the green olive groves and grape vines and the growing of citrus fruits.

Traditional Cretan lifestyle has not changed in centuries: coffee under the shade of trees, traditional dances to the sound of the Cretan lyre and the drinking of Cretan wine. Old cities are to be found behind walls where their narrow alleys lead to the local squares, churches and the ruins of palaces. There are cities living the pace of modern life, developing day by day with shops selling folk art, textiles, pottery, leather goods and department stores with luxury items.

Knossos, Festos, Malia, Zakros, Aptera, Lato, Driros, Gortys, Arkadi: are places which played an important role in the history of the island from Neolithic to modern times. All of these portray the many dimensions of Crete, where one of the most important civilisations, the Minoans flourished. The island was also the birthplace of such important artists and writers as El Greco, Damaskinos and Kazantzakis.

Must see in Crete

• The splendid Palace of Knossos which houses the golden artifacts of the Minoan age. The phenomenon of ghosts is said to occur at the Venetian Castle of Frangokastello, on the Libyan Sea in south western Crete. The ghosts are said to be the souls of dead Cretan soldiers who died in 1828 during an attack by the Turks.
• The Samaria Gorge is an incredible experience, providing you are physically strong enough to walk downhill for 15 kilometers. When you get to Omalos find the wooden staircase and journey down. Eventually you reach a stream and begin your trek towards the sea.

• In the village of Dafnes, near the city of Herakleion, there is a wine festival which takes place every July.
• In August the celebration of the Grape Harvest is held in various parts of the Island.
• The festival of Agios Ioannis Klidonas is celebrated in June where you can taste fruits and tsikoudia, at Agios Miron.
