The Island of Rhodes is situated in the eastern Mediterranean basin and is the eastern most island of the Greek archipelago. The landscape alternates from, picturesque villages, beaches, open country, and forests. The island also has a well-developed agricultural industry, with fruit (lemons, oranges, apricots and tangerines).and vegetable production. There are many vineyards which provide the famous wines and Rhodian champagne. The swimming beaches can be found on the East Coast where the water is very calm but those people wishing to windsurf, may prefer the windy west coast. Rhodes has good facilities for many sporting activities they include: golf, tennis, cycling, horse riding, water sports, mountaineering, and walking tours of cultural and ecological interest also rambling, snorkelling and sub-aqua fishing. There are also trips to the small neighbouring islands via boat . Travel on Rhodes There is a bus transport network which covers the entire island, further information can be obtained from the ‘bus station in Rhodes. Over the summer months there are sea links with Samos, Thessaloniki and Cyprus. Rhodes has flights daily to Athens, and two or three times a week to Crete (heraklion) and Thessaloniki. During the summer months there are planes to Cyprus, Santorini, Mykonos, and Sitia (Crete). It is also connected by air to other islands in the Dodecanese – Kos, Karpathos, kassos and Kastellorizo. The Rhodes international airport "Diagoras" is located near the village of Paradissi, 16 kilometres south-west of Rhodes city. The airport has limited facilities, a public bus service connects the airport to the city.
