About Florence

200 years before the birth of Christ Florence was founded by the Romans. Firenze the Italian name for Florence is a city overflowing with history and culture and is built on the banks of the River Arno and is the main city in Tuscany. The main industry here is tourism with visitors soaking up the art and architecture as well as the sun. This busy city quite densely populated, does become very hot in the summer and visiting off season will avoid the crush and be cooler. There are more artistic treasures here per square metre than any other city in the world. Going “off road” exploring the back streets and small piazzas will reveal even more old churches and museums with plenty of bars and trattorias for a cool drink. Florence Cathedral dominates the Piazza del Duomo with walls inlaid with green, white and pink marble. The impressive dome is worth the climb for a panoramic view of Florence and the Belltower also oversees this delightful city.

The showpiece piazza has to be Piazza Della Signoria with the elaborate Neptune Fountains with daring carved nymphs cavorting in the water. The works of Titian and Michelangelo are housed in the Uffizi Renaissance Gallery and one room is filled with paintings by Botticelli. Going towards the river is one of the most famous bridges in the world Ponte Vecchio. Small shops selling fine jewellery are perilously sitting on the narrow river crossing and are a magnet for those who shop.

The student quarter of San Marco lures many people for a glimpse of a famous nude. In the Academy Gallery is the glorious marble statue of David one of Michelangelo’s best known works of art created in 1504. Via Romana is an area for those selling unusual antiques and crafts and ideal for finding something to take home. The provincial image of retail is no longer, now the glitzy stores sell designs by the major fashion houses. The elegant Italian leather goods are very popular with shoes and luggage in chic styles. Restaurants as expected provide high quality food and wine with plenty of Italian charm. Famous for ice cream the variety here is immense and tempting as are the famous Florentine biscuits.
