Milan
City Guide
Milan is the financial and business centre of the country as well as the main communications and transport hub being the home to their Stock Exchange. It is also home to the Conservatory of Music, the Art Academy, La Scala, the most famous opera house in the world, and a long list of famous art galleries and libraries.
Designer clothes and furnishings are a major attraction for many tourists as are the restaurants. Eating out in Milan is excellent and many of the best restaurants are located around the Navigli area or around the Stazione Centrale. Milan has two principal airports: Milan Linate and Milan Malpensa. Budget flights from the UK also use Milan Bergamo Airport, further away from Milan.
Must see in Milan
- The Duomo, Milan's cathedral - This is one of the largest churches in the world. It is a surprisingly elegant mass of marble boasting 135 spires and 3,400 statues. Although commissioned in 1386, by Gian Galeazzo Visconti, the Duomo was not finished until the early 1800s. The building began life as a Gothic cathedral, but has over the centuries gone through several modifications, and so the finished Duomo is a strange mixture of styles.
- La Scala - This is one of the world's greatest opera houses and should be even greater once it reopens after its current renovations.
- Pinacoteca Ambrosiana Art Gallery - Artists include Leonardo da Vinci, Caravaggio and Raphael
- Pinacoteca di Brera Art Gallery - Which contains works by Italy's greatest masters.
