Verona has many interesting archeological sites including a beautiful medieval centre. It is an extremely busy and appealing tourist destination ideal for that weekend break. There is a Roman Arena where concerts and operas are performed in the summer and there is also the famous 'Juliet's balcony' which can be seen on the Shakespearian tourist trail. Some of the churches within this city contain fine works of art and for excellent views the ruined Teatro Romano over the river has great views from the terraces.

• Monteforte d'Alpone's carnival - This is one of the most famous with floats and masked groups who parade through the central streets at night amongst clouds of confetti and streamers. Last Saturday of Carnival Week
• The Verona Carnival - This has now existed for 470 yearsand is on the last Friday before Lent, equivalent to Pancake Day) it is a fairly quirky Veronese celebration.

Must see in Verona

• Palazzo Forzi- This palace now houses modern and contemporary art but was in the past home to Napolean.
• Corso Cavour - This is one of Verona's most attractive streets. It is lined with glorious palaces and old churches. There are also three fine examples of great Veronese architecture the Palazzo Carlotti, a superb Baroque example, Palazzo Carnesali from the mid-16th century and the Palazzo Scannagetti
• From the Torre dei Lamberti - which is a cool (84m high), you can enjoy one of the most beautiful panoramic views in Verona. To get to it you enter through the courtyard of the Mercato Vecchio. You can then either take a lift or climb up on foot.
