Must See in around Funchal

  • Madeira offers an extensive range of sporting facilities from paragliding, rock climbing and mountain biking to horse riding and tennis. For the enthusiastic and committed golfer, the island has two championship courses. Santo da Serra course is set in eucalyptus forests almost 700 metres above sea level, offering spectacular views. The other, Palheiro Golf, opened in 1993 and is located on a hillside overlooking Funchal, just a 15-minute drive from the capital. Or try the thrills and excitement of surfing, windsurfing, snorkelling, scuba diving or sailing.
  • If you are a fisherman, you will be pleased to learn that Madeira is also gaining an international reputation as a top-class, deep-sea fishing destination, the place to catch 500-kg-plus blue marlin. All kinds of tuna are also plentiful. A cultural inheritance of over 500 years can be seen by the visitor in many churches and museums.
  • Rich merchants donated fine paintings to the island's churches over the centuries, the best of which can be viewed in the Museum of Sacred Art. Regional arts and crafts can also be seen around the island.
  • The best views can be seen if you follow the levadas (man-made small irrigation canals), which wind their way around the island. It's simply nature at its best.
  • If you prefer something gentler, visit Monte and enjoy the tropical gardens. There are many gardens open to the public. Among the loveliest are the Botanical Gardens, Quinta do Palheiro and the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens in the hills overlooking Funchal.
