Once in New Zealand you can legally drive there for up to 12 months if you have either a current driver's licence from your home country or an International Driving Permit (IDP). You are required to carry your drivers licence with you at all times. If the licence is not in English you must have it translated into English before you arrive in New Zealand. You will drive on the left-hand side of the road and the speed limit is 100km/h on the open road and 50km/h in urban areas. Drivers and all passengers must wear a safety belt in both the front and back seats.
