Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean and is situated in the middle of the Western Mediterranean, just 12 kms from Corsica. It's coastlinde is generally high and rocky and the island is surrounded by shallow seas. The island's beaches are some of the cleanest and least crowded in Italy. The capital of Sardini is Cagliari and The National Archaeological Museum of Cagliari contains prehistoric tombs and other significant artefacts from the Punic and Roman periods. The classiest resort on the Island is Costa Smeralda well worth a visit even if you are not staying there.

Driving in Sardinia

Drive on the right is Sardinia. Wearing of seatbelts is compulsory in front and back seats. Children between 4 - 12 are not allowed in the front seat unless you use a suitable restraint system for their age. Speed limits on the motorways is 130 km/h, (110km/h when wet), 110 km/h on the main dual carriageways, (90km/h when wet). On open roads the limit is 90km/h reduced to 80km/h in rain and 50km/h in built up areas.


Must see in Sardinia

  • The National Archaeological Museum of Cagliari - This fascinating museum contains prehistoric tombs and other significant artefacts from the Punic and Roman periods.
  • Alghero - The fishing port of Alghero, situated on the northwest coast, is Sardinia's main tourist centre. It consists of a picturesque and well-preserved old town enclosed within its ancient walls.
  • Neptune's Grotto - To get here you need to take a boat ride from Alghero to Neptune's Grotto. It is an impressive marine cave cut into the sheer cliffs at Capo Caccia.

Dates for Your Diary

  • Wine festival - Held in the first weekend in August in Jerzu in the heart of Ogliastra. Taste typical products and the famous Jerzu Cannonau wine, strong and scented.
  • Bonfire of Sant'Antonio 17 January - Held in Norbello, an oak tree is chosen and a group of 18 year olds haul it into the town while the local girls look on feeding them with sweets or pastries. The tree is set alight in front of the Church of San Giovanni.
  • Caccia alla Giovenca - Held mid August in Guasila a heifer is set free and young horsemen attempt to lasso it while the older men of the town do everything they can to stop it happening. The one who grabs the animal by its horns wins a red handkerchief representing a future marriage.
