Car Hire Cartegena :: Cartegena City GuideCartagena is in the Murcia region of South-East Spain, right on the Mediterranean. It has a large, busy natural harbour, and has been an important sea-port since its foundation in about 225 B.C. sadly no traces of the ancient city now remain. Sadly the rich silver mines exploited by the Carthaginians and Romans are now almost exhausted. In the 20th century it suffered competition from many of the other Mediterranean ports (e.g., Valencia & Barcelona). The medieval Castillo de la Concepción, the ruins of which are surrounded by fine gardens, commands an impressive view of the harbour and city. Cartagena is still unspoiled by commercialism but still maintains a business-like air which encourages new industries to keep the famous harbour thriving. The surrounding area of Cartagena is where you can witness Spain at its most delightful, huertas rise majestically above the green orange groves, still fed by the ancient network of canals.
