Cartagena is in the Murcia region of South-East Spain, right on the Mediterranean. It has a large, busy natural harbour, and has been an important sea-port since its foundation in about 225 B.C. sadly no traces of the ancient city now remain. Sadly the rich silver mines exploited by the Carthaginians and Romans are now almost exhausted. In the 20th century it suffered competition from many of the other Mediterranean ports (e.g., Valencia & Barcelona).

The medieval Castillo de la Concepción, the ruins of which are surrounded by fine gardens, commands an impressive view of the harbour and city. Cartagena is still unspoiled by commercialism but still maintains a business-like air which encourages new industries to keep the famous harbour thriving. The surrounding area of Cartagena is where you can witness Spain at its most delightful, huertas rise majestically above the green orange groves, still fed by the ancient network of canals.

Must See in Cartegena

• The Roman Theatre, is a fantastic reminder of Cartagena's past. The Calblanque Nature reserve a short drive away, reached by taking the motorway towards La Manga.
• The San Pedro del Pinatar Reserve is also well worth a visit. For the golfers in your party, the Club de Golf at Los Belones is set in beautiful countryside a short drive from the city.

• Easter week in Cartagena, Murcia and Lorca is a time for great celebration with it's processions and a 7 day carnival.
• Music, dancing and staying up all night are traditional here. The festivities are open to all with visitors warmly welcomed.
