Geneva is located in the western most corner of Switzerland. It is situated on the shores of Lake Geneva, Europe's largest lake and the Rhone river. To the west, are the Jura mountains and to the east, the French Alps.

It has excellent air links with most major cities in Europe and is a hub of Europe's highway network. Originally settled by the Romans, Geneva became important firstly as a trading town in the middle ages and then as a haven for persecuted Protestants from the rest of Europe. It became part of Switzerland in 1814 and in 1864 began its association with international politics and human rights when the Red Cross was founded here. Today Geneva is widely recognised as the city of Peace.

Geneva plays host to some 190 international organisations - the UN European headquarters, the UN Conference for Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the World Health Organisation (WHO), and the High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR). It is in the French speaking part of Switzerland but due to the multicultural nature of its population you may hear almost any other language being spoken.
