About Aberdeen Airport

Situated just 7 miles north west from the 'Granite City' of Aberdeen in the north east of Scotland, Aberdeen Airport is the most northerly fully commercial airport in the country. It is an important link in the physical communication chain with the far flung northern islands of Scotland and also with Sweden, Norway and Finland. It is the site of one of the busiest and most vital non-military heliports in the whole of the United Kingdom, providing a support lifeline to the offshore oilfields of the North Sea. The greater majority of flights passing through the airport are helicopter flights to and from the rigs. Passengers can travel direct from Aberdeen to most of the major city airports within the UK.

The airport is naturally well geared to travellers on business and pleasure alike. It is an efficient operation handling in excess of 2.5 million passengers each year. The ground floor of the terminal building houses the information desk close to the check in desk.

The terminal has the usual facilities with a good variety of shops including a newsagent and a tobacconist, The Whisky Shop, The Box of Delights selling specialist confectionary, and other shops selling Scottish souvenirs and traditional foods. The terminal building also has a bureau de change situated next to the main entrance that also provides banking services and a baby care room. The bars and restaurants include The Tap and Spile serving local Scottish beer and food and Bropthy's Bar.

Airport Hotels and Parking

Aberdeen airport has two hotels on site - the Airport Skean Dhu and the Speedbird Inn. This latter hotel has a small conference facility. Close by is the Aberdeen Airport Thistle Hotel with a boardroom and conference facilities for around 500 delegates. There are also a number of other hotels within a short drive from the airport including the Kirkhill Lodge, the Marriot and the Holiday Inn.

Car parking is available for both long and short term at the terminal building itself and there are other parking areas that primarily serve heliport customers.

Things to see in Aberdeen

Aberdeen is surrounded by some of the most enthrallingly beautiful countryside in the U.K. Take the car and a map and just drive north and west to see natural marvels of landscape that will leave you breathless with admiration. If you decide you want a little extra, join the Whisky trail and search for the little distilleries that dot this great landscape. You won't be disappointed.

Closer to home in the city itself, Aberdeen Maritime Museum is well worth a look. It is actually constructed around an old oil rig, and tells the history of Aberdeen and its connection with the North Sea. A visit to The Stratosphere interactive science museum is also fun.
