It is so named after an early prominent citizen's home of Jersey in the Channel Islands. It is nicknamed the Garden State due to its historical importance to America as the agricultural area and a major food supplier to the city of New York. Today, although agriculture is still important, the economy of the state relies most heavily on its petro-chemical and service industries. The state is in fact America's leading producer of chemicals including cosmetics and soap products. Tourism is a very important factor in the economy and with some spectacular scenery and 130 miles of Atlantic coastline famed for its fine, sandy beaches that are a favoured summer resort for many New York City dwellers; New Jersey has a lot to offer the tourist. Some famous New Jersey sons and daughters include J. Fenimore Cooper – the author of Last of the Mohicans, Frank Sinatra and Whitney Houston.
